On the doorstep

A few ideas for when you’re not by the fire.

What we’d do if we had a day off

Polgooth’s one of those corners of Cornwall where you can still find a quiet lane, a proper local pub and a stretch of coast that isn’t heaving. We’re not going to list every beach in the county—just the sort of things we’d suggest to a friend who’s staying with us.

Morning fog often hangs over the coast until late; when it lifts, the light’s lovely for a walk. There are paths that take you along the cliffs or down to coves where you can have a proper breather. If you’d rather stay inland, the villages round here have a mix of tea rooms, galleries and the kind of pubs that haven’t been done up beyond recognition.

St Austell’s nearby if you need supplies or a change of scene; the rest of the south coast is within easy reach. For a bit more structure, our Cornwall travel guide has some practical tips on getting about and when to visit.

After a day out, there’s always a seat by the fire and something on the bar. See our Stay & Dine page for what we offer.
