Cornwall travel guide

Getting here, when to visit and a few things worth knowing.

Making the most of your trip

Cornwall’s one of those places that rewards a bit of planning—not because it’s complicated, but because the roads can get busy and the weather’s part of the experience. Polgooth sits on the south side, inland from the coast but within easy reach of St Austell, the A390 and the main routes in.

If you’re driving, allow a bit of extra time in summer and on bank holidays; the lanes are narrow in places and there’s no point rushing. Trains run to St Austell and other towns, and from there you can pick up local buses or taxis. Once you’re here, having a car makes it easier to explore the beaches and villages, but you can still have a good break without one if you’re happy to stick to the immediate area and the odd taxi.

Spring and early autumn often give you the best of both worlds: fewer crowds, decent weather and the coast at a more relaxed pace. Winter has its own appeal—fires, quiet walks and a proper cosy stay. Summer’s busy but the long evenings and sea air are hard to beat.
